- 01 · Book and hand over the carChoose an option for your vehicle, then bring the original registration document and keys to the booked workshop.
- 02 · Workshop pre-checkThe workshop assesses the vehicle. If repairs are needed, agree the quotation before proceeding.
- 03 · Examination and resultPackages with examination assistance arrange the testing-centre visit. A pass produces the renewal certificate; failed items follow the examination notice.
Questions before booking
How does a workshop pre-check differ from annual examination?
A workshop pre-check identifies vehicle-condition issues to address before testing. Statutory examination is carried out by a Transport Department designated testing centre. A pre-check neither replaces it nor guarantees a pass.
How does the examination fee differ from the package price?
The current first-examination fee for a private car is HK$585. It is separate from how a workshop prices its checks and assistance. A fee is included only when the package says so; do not assume repair, parts or re-examination charges are covered.
When does a private car need annual examination?
Private cars manufactured at least six years before licensing require annual examination before licence renewal. Examination can be arranged within four months before the existing licence expires, allowing time to address vehicle issues.
What happens if the car fails?
The testing centre issues an examination and repair notice listing failed items. After addressing them, arrange re-examination at the same centre within 14 days of the first test. Charges or exemptions depend on the notice; a test after 14 days incurs the full fee.
Is AutoMate the official government booking website?
AutoMate arranges partner-workshop services and bookings, rather than operating the Transport Department website. Statutory testing is performed by designated centres, which you can also book directly.
